The fact that Saroo survived at all is astounding. I cannot even begin to comprehend what it would be like to grow up or live in that type of environment. The poverty described in this book is heartbreaking and tragic. This memoir truly made me realize just how much I take for granted in my life. I wonder if the trauma and poverty Saroo experience as a child imprinted his memories deeper than those of us fortunate enough to grow up in a safe environment where we don’t worry about food and shelter. While reading this book I tried to recollect things that happened in my life as a five year old and I realized I have very few memories that I can recall and none of them have much detail. I found the things he didn’t remember correctly, like the pronunciation of his name (Sheru vs Saroo), to be really interesting and in some ways shocking. Through his impeccable dedication to retain his memories of his early childhood, he was able to find his way back home again against all odds. The journey Saroo went on, not only to survive but also to return to his beginnings, would have taken the bravery of a lion.
